I DONT USE HEAVYPAINT ENOUGH RARGH!!!!!!

i know yall use it 4 like doing studies but i really think it's underestimated as like just a general illustration tool, personally i always go back to this piece of homestuck fanart for inspiration

original post

i just love the gritty and aggressively digital texture, i'm still really proud of the one piece i did for the madoka earth day zine. and i've wanted to use it for an arcane fanart project but i keeo getting 2 intimidated  :'(  :'(  :'(  :'( i knoww the weakness is mine to BEAR

just kind of opening the floor for more conversation bcz i know ppl in here rly like using it. more heavypaint fanart is my only agenda for this thread LMAO

edit: i also forgot about this kingdom come deliverance 2 fanart also done in heavypaint, like i dont go here but it looks good

haha, that lady I painted awhile back was literally a mixer paint abomination turned painting of this exact painting!  I love it sm

Heavypaint is wonderful I've definitely taken to it for studies but I really want to use it for more imaginative stuff!!!!!!  I find it's best on my phone or my iPad to just paint life really quickly & easily but also at a low stakes kinda way because HP is "allowed" to be all messy and weird and stuff  :crullins:  Weirdly difficult to get into, it's like a different kinda mindset when you're painting, but def a good thing.

this is prolly my fav thing I've done in HP, but still jus a study.

oooo what a fun painting *saves to desktop*

and tbh u dont NEED an ipad for heavypaint. ive got the demo on my android phone for dicking around & ive got the like old desktop program version on my computer, so dont feel like u need to get Yet Another Computer to use heavypaint LOL. unless ur just looking 4 an excuse 2 buy an ipad

to be fair thats literally what heavypaint was designed for: plein air studies w/an unintuitive toolset that forces u to think outside the box. but i feel like it can also fo so much more!!! heavypaint as just a tool excites at such a neat intersection of the artistic mind and creative but intuitive technology. like the painting version of those gloves imogen heap uses to do sound mixing. like we can deff do so much more w the tool!!

and *punches ur shoulder* NO BUTS its just good!!!! i rly loke the greenish tone on her forhead. so fleshy.

THEY HAVE A WEBAPP??
My tablet broke so I've been trying to get around that without spending money. Turns out, my college has a couple wacoms, but no software except for Photoshop. I'm ideologically opposed to using that software nevermind that I don't remember to use it for painting, it's fuck Adobe. So I thought I was screwed! I still kinda am but now I can do painting studies when I'm on campus!!

This is great news for me, I can spread the gospel of HeavyPaint far and wide.

yea iirc the main version of heavypaint has been the webapp for a while, you can fuck around for free but to actually export your files i think u still have to pay. but you're in college so i think you'd qualify for the student discount if u decide u wanna buy it :D !

Doin' the Lord's work this fine Sunday and spreadin' the good word of Heavy Paint :nukoyay:

OHHHH I LOVE HEAVYPAINT!! Kringle your artwork up there looks soo good and marty who did the kcd2 art is one of my favourite artists fr, i have a bunch of their heavypaint stuff saved on my ipad for inspo when using hp

And guespiere that study looks soooo good!!

I actually use heavypaint for pretty much all my rough/base colours now, i put my sketches from procreate in there as a multiply layer and then add colour underneath which i put back into procreate after for polishing. I find i do better, more cohesive colours there, also the textures are just great and procreate doesnt have a lasso tool really

Heres some of my heavypaint stuff!
(nevermind about asking how to attach stuff i figured it out lol)

YESSS its so impressive how clean they get their stuff. however i must disclaim the first drawing is not mine. however this one is!

it's so interesting tho cause when i use heavypaint as an illustration tool i make a sketch in a seperate program and then import it to color, as opposed to doing my base colors in heavypaint then exporting it to my preferd program. i super super love the texture heavypaint brushes give w the color jitter so once i start coloring in there i'm locked in. i feel like my next level up is when i get comfortable actually, u know, DRAWING in heavypaint LOL.

This illustration is very pretty, I really like the colours and the texture on the hair.  :nukoyay:

I checked out Heavypaint but unfortunately it does not seem to work on Firefox. I will have to check out if the Android version is compatible on my tablet. I have wanted to look into art programs that emulate traditional painting lately and have found a handful I really like so it would be nice to add one more to the list.

I kind of have two different workflow/styles tbh, one is like that, either entirely heavypaint or a sketch elsewhere then just heavypaint, its more painterly and experimental, and the other is with lineart and is more detailed/clear so procreate works better for the finishing touches (need to be able to use liquefy and transform as well as flip the canvas also)

Honestly its mostly to keep my commissions consistent that i dont let myself totally switch, i do have a heavypaint style option tho for the more experimental painterly style

At the risk of sounding quite ignorant, what's the deal with Heavypaint? The website and other sources don't really go into how it differs from other digital art programs but it seems like it's got a very specific vibe to it from what I can gather.

i think it probably doesn't go into it much because its easiest to tell from using it, but basically heavypaint has base color-jitter in all of its brushes which encourages creative color choice, and it also has a lot of unique tools: like a fanbrush, or square blocking tool w a gradient, or a line tool that has diff colors in it, just a lot of randomness introduced into the process so u have to think more creatively with your toolset.

it's initial purpose (and it maintains that a fair bit, but not as much as the beginning) is to be purposefully limiting, to force people to get creative.  it's definitely added a lot of QOL stuff, like initially there were no layers, undo was like a setting you turned on that made you feel bad about it, etcetc.
and then, yeah, these days colour jitter is fun and the tools are still constricting in a way you rly gotta thing in shapes as a whole and not really draw too much

speaking of HP I hate webbypaint because it doesn't work in my browser & I really like HP2 way more than 3/4 - you can find HP2 https://www.heavypaint.com/classic-downloads/ and then get 'runasdate', https://runasdate.org/, use it to create a .exe of HP that automatically runs it at the first day of the trial & you can just rock the best heavypaint there is, on PC, without any fees or anything.
main issue is the saving feature in-program is hit or miss on whether it wants to show you your saved HP files or not.  You can save 'em as .hp && pngs and stuff and open 'em no problem, but the heavypaint-shows-you-your-timelapse-for-each-file-thing kinda is busted.
