hey chat
i'm inviting people from a few different friendgroups to this forum, so i really encourage everyone to make an intro thread! #notajoke #4cereal . this could be just some conversation starters, some things you've been working on that you'd like to share, or some fun facts abt yourself.
so *cough* i'll start
hey guys whats up its kringle. im, like, the guy who bites on your ankles on discord. as some of you may know i spend a bit of time on places like neocities (https://neocities.org/), the melonland forums (https://forum.melonland.net/), and 32bitcafe (https://32bit.cafe/), which got me interested in the more indie side of web development and code and all that "making shit on your computer" nerd stuff. the fall of discord and like, more people learning that its spyware (https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/discord) that will leak your (https://www.nyccriminalattorneys.com/discord-federal-investigation-what-you-need-to-know/) shit to cops (https://discord.com/safety/360044157931-Working-with-law-enforcement) is something thats pushed me into finally creating this forum.
in the modern era of the internet we own less and less of the infrastructure we use to create our community: whether it be creating anti-ice organizations through instagram(owned by facebook which will protect ICE), or needing to use twitter to promote yourself as an artist for visibilty, even though it feeds all ur stuff to grok. by making this forum i'm hoping to create a space that is explicitly and intrinsically non-exploitative, where people can create community with as little ethical-bargaining as possible. and ultimately make a space where people can talk about their art and what there interested in without worrying about how that will interface with the entire social media landscape. and fucking, post and talk about stuff in a place that won't, like, try to collect and sell your data!!! i have no idea how this became a big ask in the modern day.
also, i see the idea of 'x owned' being used a lot in the physical world but often that ethos isn't translated to online community spaces. by making this place i'm hoping to push back against all that big tech corpo bullshit in my own way small way by making a space that is community owned, run, and created. but u know like online.
so yeah thats my whole thing, besides you know the art stuff which yall already know about. I HAVE SO MANY ZINES I NEED TO BE WORKING ON RN AAAAAAA
YOU'LL OWN EVERYTHING AND BE HAPPY
Kringle
I always knew you were not collaborating with cops.
I would never work with cops so we are on the same page.
Love you, thanks so much for providing a digital space that we can feel comfortable in and can safely post art without giga corporations stealing it for profit.

lmaooo im glad that this is the energy i give off. and yeah! it lowkey was really important to me to be to provide this space. i'm not an avid poster so it doesn't super affect me, but i can see how over time the algorithm and capitalisms interaction with it have made the art community online less about learning and more about clickbait and how to turn a profit out of our art. which sucks! there needs to be a place where we can focus on what we want to get out of our relationship between our art and the digital world, and not worry abt numbers or outside factors.
i've lowkey been talking abt this forum in some shape or another all week and i really can't emphasize enough how grateful i am that people seem to be as hyped for this as i am :blushy: , it means alot to me!!!!
i'm not really sure why u attatched a cat picture but i saved it to my desktop

I added the cat pic because it's me calling you (bestie) on my old nokia phone,
talking about whatever the fuck we want because nobody is listening in :kirbart:
I think a lot of us crave a time back when the net was whole and there were a million tiny websites, that were up and thriving. I love that you bring back the good old times we are all nostalgic for.

ah ok that does make more sense. happy to help make the internet better one silly website at a time :comfmonk:
This is amazing Kringle! Constructive and radical action :kirbart:

Thank you! That's the phrase I've been looking for that captures what I've been thinking and feeling. I feel like I'm bargaining and compromising my ethics more and more, bit by bit. Every bargain nudging me further into a corner of alienation. This is a prime example of how the response to it is formulated: in the confluence of creativity, knowledge, and solidarity. My background and political upbringing is with anarcho-syndicalist labor union organizing, and I very much support and stand with this action.
I'm gonna go write my own intro now, and see if I can find some old forum banners of mine, or make new ones that channel the appropriate energy.

thats really cool, and i learned something new!
i'm glad i was able 2 put 2 words what u've been feeling auto, it's deff been frustrating for me using platforms that i know are funded by like an evil white man and then at least 50 goons stacked on top of eachother in a trenchcoat, so i'm glad i was able to do this as a way 2 push against all that :comfmonk:
i can only echo Auto here, i'm happy we have this space now!
the slower pace of forum posting sounds perfect for me right about now, i've been trying to be more purposeful and slow down. i get very overwhelmed when having to keep up with too many discord servers (they piled up over time and no matter how much i try to keep a lean list, i cannot get rid of all the ones i have now bc they're different friend groups...) and juggling platforms on top of that is just too much.
excited to see where this goes!
